B2B Garlic Sourcing 2026: Cheap Prices, Sharper Buyer Discipline

by zileeland 06 Aug 2026

For most of 2026, the numbers coming out of China's garlic market have read like an invitation to buy. Farm-gate prices in Jinxiang, the Shandong production base that anchors the global trade, are running roughly a third below last year, with fresh garlic trading around 1.55 yuan per jin through the harvest window. Export volume keeps setting records, and analysts at Zhuochuang now expect the 2026/27 season to ship more than 2.4 million tonnes of fresh and chilled garlic, topping last season's record of 2.33 million tonnes. On paper, this is the clearest buyer's market the trade has seen in years.

What the headline leaves out is that the decline is uneven, and that unevenness is exactly where a professional buyer either gains an edge or loses money. A soft market rewards the procurement teams that read the price structure carefully, and it quietly punishes the ones who treat a falling index as permission to relax and chase the lowest quote.

The Price Drop Is Real, but Not Uniform

Start with what the cheap numbers actually mean. A 32% year-on-year decline at the farm gate does not turn into a 32% cheaper container at the destination port, and it never did. Between the field and your warehouse sit drying, grading, packing, inland freight, and an ocean freight market that has stayed elevated all season. Export reference prices reported in early August put 6.0cm garlic near 3.60 yuan per jin, 5.5cm around 3.35, and 5.0cm around 2.90, while white-skin export garlic moves in an FOB band of roughly US$980 to US$1,280 per tonne depending on spec and packing.

More telling than any single figure is the spread. This season the gap between top-grade bulbs and ordinary mixed stock has widened to something like 8-15%, because persistent rain during the post-harvest drying window damaged a meaningful share of the crop. The cheap end of the market is genuinely cheap; the clean, dry, uniformly sized garlic that clears strict import markets is quietly firm. China's export data tells the same story, with value falling faster than volume. It is the classic "volume up, price down" pattern, and it lets a buyer feel like a winner while the margin quietly erodes.

Cheap markets are not simple markets. Three forces are shaping this one, and each changes what a sensible order looks like.

The first is inventory. Combined stocks of all grades are expected to exceed five million tonnes, which means sellers will keep discounting ordinary and low-grade garlic while holding premium stock for a better price. A buyer who specifies a grade loosely gets shown the discounted pile. A buyer who specifies precisely gets shown the scarce one.

The second is demand divergence. European buyers, already strict on quality, are less willing to accept mold-affected bulbs this year, while countries with their own production, Turkey among them, have cut back on imports. The buyers still in the market are, on average, the more exacting ones.

The third is freight. Elevated ocean rates mean the landed-cost advantage of a cheap FOB price is thinner than it looks. That pushes the real decision away from "who quotes the lowest number" and toward "who can deliver the grade, the spec, and the documentation that survive the journey."

A Disciplined Playbook for a Soft Market

Grade first, price second

Specification is where most mistakes get made, and 2026 has made them easier to make. Know your diameter range. The standard export classes run 4.5cm, 5.0cm, 5.5cm, 6.0cm, and 6.0cm up to 7.0cm. Know the variety too, because pure white garlic and normal white garlic sit at different price points and serve different retail channels. Demand weight compliance in writing, and ask how the supplier checks moisture and mold before packing. A 5.5cm spec on paper is not a 5.5cm bulb in the container unless the supplier's sorting can hold the tolerance.

Match the pack to the destination

Packaging is not an afterthought; it is part of the product's survival and its sell-through. Middle East and GCC buyers tend to want 2.5kg net bags that move quickly through wholesale channels like Dubai's Ras Al Khor market. South American buyers more often take 10kg cartons or net bags sized for their distribution. Custom logo printing is standard on both, and it is worth confirming early, because repacking after the fact adds cost and delay.

Verify the supplier, not just the sample

In a market flooded with discount inventory, the supplier you can verify is worth more than the quote you cannot. Ask for pre-shipment inspection with attention to uniformity, mold, and moisture readings, and where possible inspect before you commit. Zileeland's refundable deposit model is built for exactly this: pay a deposit, inspect the stock on-site at the Dubai cold warehouse, and complete the deal only if the garlic meets the spec. The deposit is refunded if it does not.

Time the market deliberately

China's export cycle runs on a rhythm worth building into your calendar. June is the traditional peak, when new-crop garlic floods out at low prices and buyers stock up. July typically pulls back as farm-gate prices firm. August marks the shift into cold-stored garlic, which carries a storage premium but offers the best-graded stock through the rest of the year. Planning purchases against this rhythm rather than buying reactively is how a buyer captures a soft-market advantage instead of watching it pass by.

Terms That Hold Up When Prices Move

In a market this soft, the smartest buyers negotiate the financing as carefully as the price. Flexible payment structures, from sight and deferred letters of credit through D/P, D/A, and open account terms running 30 to 120 days, some backed by Sinosure credit insurance, let an importer match payment timing to their own sales cycle instead of fronting full payment on every order. Zileeland structures these options across its Jinxiang-sourced range, which spans the full 4.5cm to 7.0cm diameter range in both normal and pure white garlic, plus peeled garlic and fresh ginger.

A complimentary storage period at the destination lets a buyer stage inventory drawdown against actual demand rather than clearing containers the day they arrive. Zileeland offers this at its Dubai facility, so regional buyers can hold stock close to the point of sale and release it as their market requires.

None of this is complicated, but it is disciplined. The buyers who come out of the 2026 season ahead will not be the ones who found the lowest price. They will be the ones who read the spread, specified the grade, verified the supplier, and negotiated terms that fit their cash flow. In a cheap market, discipline is the margin.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
