Dubai Garlic Prices Nearly Double in a Quarter: GCC Buyer Guide

by zileeland 08 Sep 2026

If you buy garlic at Dubai's wholesale market, the price board this week does not look like the one from June. On 1 September, the family average for garlic across Al Aweer stood at AED 6.14 per kilogram, up from roughly AED 3.18 in early June — nearly double in under three months. Traders who quote the market each morning list two main lines: pure white garlic around AED 5.00 per kilo and other lots as high as AED 7.27, which tells you the rally is not hitting every grade equally. At today's levels, a 20-foot reefer of bagged garlic represents about AED 123,000 to 147,000 in goods value before freight, insurance and clearance.

Zileeland Dubai Hub in Ras Al KhorAl Aweer is not just another produce market. As the wholesale floor of Dubai's Central Fruit & Vegetable Market in Ras Al Khor, it is where Chinese export prices, ocean freight and Gulf demand meet in one transaction. When the family average swings by nearly a hundred percent in a quarter, it is a leading indicator for re-export flows into Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. Understanding what is driving the move — and which part of it is durable — is the difference between paying a peak price and buying just ahead of one.

Reading the Numbers Behind the Jump

The Al Aweer family average tells the story in three data points. Over the last 53 trading days, wholesale garlic has averaged AED 4.14 per kilogram, ranging between AED 2.86 and AED 6.07. Pure white garlic moved from AED 3.75 on 26 July to AED 5.00 by 25 August — a 33 percent rise in one month. Now the family average sits above AED 6.00, and the gap between grades has widened at the same time.

That widening spread is the detail most buyers miss. When every grade moves together, it is usually a logistics story; when premium lots pull away from standard ones, it is a supply story. A gap of AED 5.00 to AED 7.27 means ordinary bagged garlic still covers base demand, but the cleaner lots that supermarkets and food service insist on are getting scarce and expensive. For a GCC importer, that signals a shift in the quality mix of cargoes arriving in Dubai, not just their price.

Why the Supply Pipeline Is Tightening at Origin

The roots are in Shandong, where this year's record harvest of roughly 16.4 million tonnes set up an unusual first half of 2026. Export volumes were front-loaded and cheap early in the year as suppliers cleared stock, which kept Gulf prices soft through spring. That phase is now reversing. China's July export data, released in late August, show total fresh garlic shipments of about 239,400 tonnes, with Shandong — the province behind most Gulf-bound cargo — down 20.85 percent year on year.

August and September are the seasonal handover months when the export pipeline rotates from new-season ambient stock to cold-room garlic, and that rotation is arriving with two complications. Rain during the post-harvest drying window left a share of the crop with surface mould, so exporters are separating good lots from marginal ones more aggressively. Meanwhile the premium for large, clean bulbs has widened to an estimated 60 to 80 percent over common garlic, with tight supply in the over-6 cm sizes Gulf retail buyers prefer. Analysts expect a modest rebound in Shandong prices through September and October as cold-room stock becomes the export mainstay.

Freight sits on top of this. Spot quotes on China-to-Gulf lanes topped USD 10,000 per 40-foot container at points this summer, and carriers keep adding surcharges even as Red Sea services resume. The practical effect: a kilogram of garlic landing in Dubai carries a higher origin basis and a higher freight component than it did in May. The AED 6.14 print is not a bubble — it is a pass-through of costs already in the pipeline.

What This Means for September Buying Decisions

The timing matters because of a lag few importers plan for. Cargo booked in September sails in October and lands in Dubai in November, eight to ten weeks later. Waiting for Al Aweer prices to fall before committing means betting against a cold-store rotation at origin, elevated freight, and the Q4 build-up that historically starts before the Gulf's cooler months.

Seasonality reinforces the point. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, putting the final reliable shipping window from China in December at the latest. Orders placed in the next six to eight weeks are the ones that will stock Gulf shelves for the peak demand period. Waiting for a price correction works in a surplus year. This is not one — at least not in the grades Gulf buyers actually need.

Three habits separate buyers who ride this cycle well from those who get caught at the top.

Inspect the actual lot before you pay a rally price. When grades are diverging, a certificate or a photo is not enough to know which side of the spread you are buying. Zileeland runs its Dubai operation out of Building 29 at the Central Fruit & Vegetable Market in Ras Al Khor on a refundable deposit model built for exactly this moment. You place a deposit against a specific lot of pure white, normal white or peeled garlic, inspect the cloves in the cold store, and either confirm the purchase or take the deposit back if the lot does not match the agreed grading standard. At a time when premium lots command premium money, paying for the right to verify before you pay in full is the cheapest insurance on the market.

Pure white garlic 5.0-5.5cm,ZileelandMatch the payment structure to a rising market. When prices climb, suppliers favour cash and buyers want flexibility — a tension that breaks deals. Sight LC, deferred LC, standby LC, D/P, D/A and 30 to 120-day open account terms, part of Zileeland's standard offer with export credit insurance available on qualifying orders, let a Gulf importer secure today's price without tying up working capital at today's peak. The right instrument often matters more than a fraction of a dirham on the kilo.

Use storage as a buffer against your own timing risk. Stock can sit under temperature control in Dubai while the market decides. A complimentary storage period at the Ras Al Khor cold store turns a single arrival date into a flexible position: you draw down as demand firms up, rather than being forced to sell into a soft week or air-freight into a shortage. Combined with the deposit model, it means the two biggest timing risks in this market — arriving too early and paying for the wrong quality — are manageable from one location.

The Bottom Line

The doubling at Al Aweer is the market repricing a tighter origin pipeline, higher freight, and a demand cycle that has not peaked yet. Dubai's wholesale board will keep moving in the coming weeks, but the direction of travel into Q4 is clearer than the exact day-to-day numbers. Gulf buyers who secure volume early, verify quality on the ground, and hold it under proper cold storage will enter the Ramadan build-up with an advantage spot buying in December cannot match.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
