September 2026: B2B Garlic Sourcing as Quality Gaps Widen

by zileeland 06 Aug 2026

China's garlic market opened September 2026 with a puzzle. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reports national planting area at roughly 12.83 million mu, up 8% from last year, while the latest production estimate puts the 2026 crop near 16.45 million tonnes. Add in carryover inventory and analysts now forecast ending stocks around 3.31 million tonnes. Those numbers point to one thing: abundance.

Yet the export numbers tell a more complicated story. July shipments of fresh or refrigerated garlic fell to 207,200 tonnes, down 12.6% month-on-month and 18.7% year-on-year, while January-July export value dropped by roughly 16%. Average export prices fell by nearly 25% in the first four months. In domestic wholesale markets, common mixed grades are trading at 1.6–2.2 yuan per jin, while large, well-cured bulbs command a 60–80% premium over standard lots.

For B2B buyers, the lesson is straightforward: this is not a uniformly cheap market. It is a split market. Volume is plentiful at the low end, but export-grade garlic is already tightening. Sourcing success in Q4 2026 will depend less on bargaining for the lowest FOB price and more on writing specifications, inspections, and payment terms that lock the right grade.

Why the Quality Gap Is the Real Story

The headline surplus is real, but it is concentrated in standard and lower grades. Heavy rainfall during the May-June drying window damaged part of the crop, and some lots were moved into storage before they were fully cured. As a result, cold-storage facilities across Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu are holding large volumes, but the share that meets strict export criteria is smaller than the tonnage suggests.

That structural shortage inside an oversupplied market is what creates the widening price spread. Processors and foodservice buyers who need uniform bulb size, tight skin, and controlled moisture are competing for the same limited pool of premium lots. Meanwhile, lower grades face persistent selling pressure. The market is not simply "down"; it is diverging.

How to Specify Garlic That Locks the Premium Tier

In a split market, the specification sheet becomes the most important commercial document. Average size alone is not enough.

  • Use calibre bands, not single numbers. A lot described as "5.5cm garlic" can hide a wide distribution. State the target calibre, the minimum acceptable calibre, and the maximum percentage allowed below the band. For retail and foodservice programs, consistency matters more than the nominal size.
  • Set defect and sprout tolerance. Define acceptable levels of broken skin, mould, sprouting, and undersized bulbs in writing. Vague phrases such as "good quality" become expensive when the container arrives.
  • Specify dryness and curing proof. Ask for moisture content or documentation that the garlic was field-cured before storage. Rushed curing raises mould and sprouting risk during ocean transit.
  • Anchor origin to Jinxiang, Shandong. Jinxiang remains the reference region for export-grade garlic because of its mature curing, grading, cold-chain infrastructure, and deep exporter network. A supplier who names the curing facility and storage location is usually more reliable than one quoting only a price.

Match Packaging to the Channel, Not Just the Cargo

Packaging affects shelf life, retailer acceptance, and landed cost per usable kilo. It should be matched to the destination channel from the start of negotiations.

In Middle Eastern markets, 2.5kg mesh bags are the retail standard. The format breathes in warm weather, fits small-store shelving, and turns quickly in wet markets. For South America, 10kg cartons or mesh bags suit wholesale and household buyers who purchase less frequently. Both formats can carry customer branding, which is valuable for importers building a private-label program.

The product format also deserves attention. While fresh bulb garlic still dominates export volume, value-added segments such as peeled garlic are growing as food manufacturers and restaurant chains look for labour-saving inputs. US peeled garlic import demand rose sharply in the first half of 2026, and global processed garlic exports gained ground earlier in the year. Buyers who can blend bulb, peeled, and processed formats into a single sourcing program reduce both handling cost and single-product risk.

Supplier Evaluation: Look Past the Quotation

In a buyer's market, the lowest quote often carries the highest hidden cost. The suppliers who will perform well through 2026 are those who can demonstrate control over quality, not just volume.

  • Ask for graded reference samples tied to specific lots. A sealed counter-sample from the actual cold-storage lot is stronger than a generic showroom sample.
  • Verify the storage location. A named warehouse in Jinxiang or a nearby major producing county gives you a verification path. If the seller cannot identify the facility, treat the lot as unverified.
  • Confirm inspection rights before payment. Physical or third-party inspection at a named warehouse is the strongest protection against grade drift.

Zileeland operates a refrigerated Dubai warehouse at Ras Al Khor Central Fruit & Vegetable Market, Building 29, stocked with pure white 5–5.5cm, normal white 5–5.5cm, and peeled garlic. Under the Refundable Deposit arrangement, buyers pay a deposit, inspect the goods on-site, and only complete the purchase once the lot matches the agreed specification. If it does not match, the deposit is returned.

Structure Payment and Storage Around Verification

When quality gaps widen, payment terms should protect the buyer without punishing a reliable supplier. Zileeland's Payment Solutions include Sight LC, Deferred LC, Standby LC, D/P, D/A, and 30–120 day open account structures, with Sinosure-backed coverage where applicable. Tying payment milestones to inspection certificates or warehouse release documents gives buyers leverage without forcing suppliers to carry all the risk.

The Complimentary Storage Period at Zileeland's Dubai facility adds further flexibility. Buyers who confirm premium stock in September but do not need immediate onward shipment can hold inventory at the GCC hub, timing dispatches to match local demand rather than supplier or shipping pressure.

Timing for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027

September and October are the decisive months. New-crop field sales are ending, cold-storage contracts are being signed, and the premium lots that are not committed now will disappear into longer-term holdings. Waiting for prices to fall further usually means watching the best grades get locked by competitors while only mixed or lower-quality inventory remains freely available.

At the same time, the oversupply in lower grades creates genuine opportunities for volume buyers who can accept standard specifications and who have strong inspection and sorting capability. The key is matching each quality tier to the right end use rather than treating all garlic as interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 garlic market is not a simple buyer's market. It is a quality-stratified market where the best bulbs already trade at a premium and the rest faces downward pressure. B2B buyers who come out ahead will use the soft price environment to upgrade specification, tighten inspection rights, and structure payment around verification.

Our Jinxiang-based program covers normal white and pure white garlic from 4.5cm to 7.0cm, peeled garlic, and fresh ginger, with Dubai stock available for immediate inspection. Treat September as the last clean window to secure export-grade garlic before the storage cycle narrows your options.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
